The church of St. Martin in Zillis is also known as the "Sistine Chapel of the Alps" with its 12th century worldwide unique painted wooden ceiling and is one of the most important cultural assets in the Beverin Nature Park.

Description

In the Romanesque era - at the beginning of the 12th century - this only surviving work in the world was created. The church ceiling consists of 153 square panels (nine rows of 17 panels each), each about 90 centimetres long.

The edge panels depict strange mythical creatures as a symbol of evil as well as scenes from the Jonas story. Furthermore, angels are arranged as personification of the four winds and heralds of the Last Judgment. The inner images are dedicated to themes from the life of Christ. The last series of pictures tells of the life of St. Martin.

It is definitely worth visiting the exhibition on the church first and then the church. The exhibition is located on the main street, less than a 5-minute walk from the church. With contemporary museological means, the exhibition contributes to the understanding of the church ceiling and the medieval world of images.
