Berlau: Kingdom of Spirits

On January 15, 1974, a hospital bed in the East Berlin Charité hospital was on fire. The patient who died in the fire caused by a cigarette: Ruth Berlau, Danish communist and lover of Bertolt Brecht. But who was this extraordinary woman who founded a theatre at the age of 24, learned to take pictures and worked with Brecht on the "Caucasian Chalk Circle"?

The hybrid-immersive staging of the Swiss-German collective RAUM+ZEIT combines virtual reality with the live play of three protagonists. Equipped with VR glasses, the audience goes individually into a scenic installation and gets very close to Ruth Berlau and Bertolt Brecht, both live and virtually.

After the VR installation "Antigone: Comeback – A Rehearsal with Weigel and Brecht", which celebrated its premiere at Theater Chur in 2018, RAUM+ZEIT is now devoting itself to Helene Weigel's unpleasant competitor Ruth Berlau.
