Three women, three generations, a pressing question ...

Heidi becomes pregnant during the Second World War and marries Hermann, with whom she builds up a flourishing real estate business in Chur. The daughter Miranda later works as a receptionist at the Hotel Schweizerhof on Lenzerheide and only has a daughter, Zusa, at an advanced age. Since the child's father, a seasonal worker, has made herself out of the dust, she raises Zusa alone. Zusa, on the other hand, struggles as a young adult to find her place in professional life, and even in love she is denied happiness.

Then Zusa discovers the truth about her grandfather through a chance find at her grandmother's retirement home – Hermann was not Miranda's biological father! Zusa goes in search of her Polish grandfather and travels to Warsaw specifically for this purpose – but in the process she encounters a number of difficulties ...

The novel deals with the history of the interned Poles in Switzerland. Relations with local women were officially forbidden to them, but there were still contacts and not a few "Polish children".
