Lukas Bärfuss: «Königin der Nacht»

A small town in Switzerland. A household with a woman and her son. There is no man, there are men. And there is always a shortage of money, and even more so of tenderness. Lukas Bärfuss's mother was a woman without education and without prospects, but with an insatiable desire for freedom. She saw the child as a bondage, she had not chosen this life. A raven mother, that's what she called herself; her son ended up on the street. She had only the weapon of the powerless, the evil mouth. And in her old age, she had no other way out than to migrate from poverty to the Dominican Republic. The son had to practice the art of outliving his mother at an early age. Today, while writing and remembering, he asks the question of where personal responsibility ends in a miserable life and that of an entire society begins.
