An exhibition in memory of Eberhard W. Kornfeld (1923-2023)

The Graubünden Art Museum is dedicating an exhibition to Alberto Giacometti, focusing entirely on his early years and artistic development. The exhibition aims to show what the young artist oriented himself towards in his development, how closely he worked together with his father Giovanni Giacometti and gradually detached himself from him, but also how he drew and painted his personal environment: in the family, in Stampa, during his school days in Schiers and in Geneva. Last but not least, an intensive examination of works of art history began during this time. Alberto Giacometti becomes aware of his role as an artist. He made this clear in impressive self-portraits as early as 1916, when he was only 15 years old. This is also shown by the portraits that Giovanni Giacometti painted of the young artist. At a young age, the first sculptures were created that showed Alberto Giacometti the path he would take. The exhibition begins with works by the 12-year-old and continues into his first years in Paris, when Alberto Giacometti dealt with cubist pictorial worlds and realized his first exhibitions.

Whereas until now the early work has always been viewed in connection with the later development of Alberto Giacometti and the youthful talent has been emphasized, this exhibition for the first time focuses entirely on the early work and illuminates it in its surprising scope and its various facets.

The exhibition is curated by Stephan Kunz and Paul Müller. It was created in close collaboration with the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Giacometti Foundation. The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive catalogue book with texts by Philippe Büttner, Casimiro di Creszenzo, Christian Klemm, Stephan Kunz and Paul Müller.
