Public guided tour Ilse Weber. Bright night

Ilse Weber (1908-1984) is an exceptional phenomenon and a single figure in Swiss art history. She belongs to the generation of female artists (Ilse Weber is a peer of Meret Oppenheim), for whom there was no typical training and career path. After a rather tentative career start, official recognition followed relatively late. Coming from a rather heavy-blooded late impressionism, the artist increasingly sought to capture images of thoughts or memories and wanted to express "what she has never seen before". When a new generation of artists appeared in public around 1970, Ilse Weber suddenly became the focus of current artistic discourse. The favor of the hour had a stimulating effect on her work. The result was a unique late work (the artist was already over 50 years old at the time): her actual main work, in which she broke away from any model and turned to a poetic subjectivity. In addition to oil painting, drawing and watercolor gained great importance. The imagery moved in a balance between the conventional subject – still life, landscape, interior – and a dreamlike reality.
Ilse Weber's last solo exhibition took place in 1992 at the Kunsthaus Zürich. The exhibition at the Bündner Kunstmuseum is only the artist's second major exhibition in an art museum, although Ilse Weber is represented in many public and private collections and is still highly esteemed, especially by artists.

The exhibition at the Bündner Kunstmuseum aims to provide a representative overview of Ilse Weber's work from her artistic breakthrough in 1960 to her death in 1984. In eight chapters, both in the exhibition and in the accompanying book, a new reading of this work is attempted. In addition to texts by Stephan Kunz, Elisabeth Bronfen and Romina Ebenhöch, a conversation with the artists Silvia Bächli and Rolf Winnewisser expresses Ilse Weber's high relevance for younger Swiss art.
