Description

The hike to the ruins of Ober-Ruchenberg Castle leads to an altitude of around 1070 m, about 400 m above the starting point in Chur. The trail begins in Chur at the Waldhaus, which is easily accessible by public transport and by car, and first climbs on a forest road into the Fürstenwald. There the path runs through the imposing Fürstenwald, along ancient spruce and larch forests. In the end , it goes steeply uphill in numerous serpentines until a neck ditch reaches the ruins - a plateau with the visible foundation walls of the former residential tower and palace. The castle ruins date back to the 13th century and were abandoned around 1500 after a fire. At the top, the remains provide impressive insights into medieval castle life and offer a panoramic view over the Rhine Valley between Chur and Trimmis. The location on the wooded mountain spur makes the atmosphere particularly atmospheric. The way back is via the same path back to the Fürstenwald and then via another route through the forest back to the starting point. In total, the hiking time is about 3 hours, with a distance of about 8.5 km and about 400 m difference in altitude. The route is considered to be of medium difficulty (T1–T2) – sturdy shoes are recommended. The tranquility and nature combined with the historic castle create an authentic experience for hikers of all ages. The castle ruins are accessible at any time and free of charge.
