Description
5 tips on the Senda Sursilvana:
- Hamlet Disla to Disentis: Small craftsman village. The chapel is striking and unique because of its octagonal shape and is one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Switzerland.
- Lag da Pigniu: Detour to Lag da Pigniu. A path easy to walk or stroll around the lake. The circuit takes about one hour. On the west side, several large waterfalls tumble down the valley in the rear part.
- Ladir: Ladir is located on a sunny terrace above Ilanz.
- Rhine Gorge – the Swiss Grand Canyon: The Rhine Gorge (Ruinaulta) between Reichenau and Ilanz is rightly called the "Swiss Grand Canyon." It is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Graubünden and is even unique in the Alps. From the viewing platform "Il Spir," you have a unique 180-degree view over the "Swiss Grand Canyon."
- Historic centre of Chur: Chur is the oldest town in Switzerland with a settlement history of over 5,000 years. The historic old town is extremely worth seeing and completely car-free.
The Surselva is more than a mountain valley. The Surselva – literally "above the forest" – is a world of its own, with its own language (Sursilvan), its own history shaped by the monastery Disentis and the mountain passes, a unique type of people, and a natural feature gaining more and more importance: water. Not without reason, the official source of the Rhine is by Lake Toma near the Oberalp Pass. The water collected in dozens of reservoirs is a source of energy. It is also the water that has eroded through the largest mapped rockslide in the world near Flims and created the impressive Ruinaulta canyon, which is hardly outdone in wildness – especially when seen from the viewing platform near Conn.
The hike through the Surselva passes through an intact landscape but also awakens cultural and historical curiosity, whether through the paintings in the Reformed Church Waltensburg or the mysterious menhirs near Falera. The crowning conclusion of four varied hiking days is a tour through the old town of Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland.
Hike comfortably from accommodation to accommodation and benefit from included luggage transport.
