Refugee Day: Action Calling a spade a spade. Commemoration of people who died on the way to Europe.
More than 65,000 people have become victims of Fortress Europe by Refugee Day 2025. In front of St. Martin's Church, they commemorate their fellow human beings with the "Call a spade" campaign. They write their names on strips of cloth or paper. They read their names and causes of death in the church and take a stand against this migration policy. Cultural workers from Graubünden will provide musical accompaniment to the event.

In cooperation with Amnesty International Group Chur, the Reformed Church Chur, the Catholic Church and the following organizations:

Amnesty International Group Davos, IG offenes Davos, Bündner Forum der Religions, Verein Hilfe für Asylsuchende Graubünden, Verein Miteinander Valzeina, Verein offene Viamala, Vossa Lingua – Verein für Interkultur

The "Call a spade" campaign takes place in:
Basel, Bern, Chur, Geneva, Lucerne, Neuchâtel, St. Gallen, Thun, Zurich and other cities in Germany.

Since 1993, the organization "unitedagainstrefugeedeaths.eu" has been documenting deaths due to border militarization, asylum laws, detention policies and deportations.

Presumably, thousands more will never be found. The consequences regularly make the headlines: corpses washed up on European shores, stowaways discovered in the back of a truck, or asylum seekers taking their own lives due to the harsh living conditions and depression associated with the lengthy decision on their asylum application.

We want to draw attention to this fatal policy of Fortress Europe and call for a rethink of immigration policy and the development of a humane view of migration.

The Refugee Day begins on Saturday, June 20, at 10:45 a.m. with the ringing of bells for the people on the run.

The reading campaign begins at 11 a.m. The opening speech will be given by Chur city councillor Patrik Degiacomi.

The event will conclude with an ecumenical service on Sunday, June 21, 10 a.m. in St. Martin's Church in Chur.
