Christina Schumacher: Anna Maria walks on glass

In her second book, Christina Schumacher, who grew up in Tschappina, dedicates herself to her ancestor Anna Maria. This is exemplary for the women of her time and class. "Anna Maria geht auf Glas" records the life of a woman in the 19th century in the municipality of Tschappina with relentless accuracy and sensitivity. Anna Maria was born in 1807 in the high-altitude hamlet of Inner Glas on Tschappina. Far away from the stage of global political events, by which her whole life was nevertheless always shaped and influenced. The Napoleonic Wars, the Congress of Vienna, the eruption of the Volcano Tambora, the year without a summer, the founding of Switzerland, epidemics, famine, wars, emigration, all the events of the 19th century also had a very direct impact on Anna Maria's life. A life that no one has documented and that no one has talked about. It was not unusual. The story of Anna Maria has probably occurred in this or similar form again and again in the remote areas of the canton of Graubünden. She is an example of the women of her time and class. And that's exactly why it has to be told. Because it is above all one thing: a story of resilience and strength.
