Today's Welschdörfli district of Chur has a settlement continuity that stretches from the Neolithic period to the present day. Since 1986, the settlement remains have been enclosed by protective structures designed by the Grisons architect Peter Zumthor.

After long, often turbulent times, the Reformation also took hold of a large part of the population in Churwalden, who claimed the lay part of the monastery church as their property. In 1696, the Protestant parish came into being.
