«Achtung Auto! Ein Jahrhundert auf den Strassen in Graubünden»

Since its invention in the 1880s, the automobile has evoked intense emotions – both positive and negative. The exclusive sports equipment of the early days became the most widely used means of transport from 1950 onwards. It has enabled new worlds of experience, created new habits and changed entire settlements and landscapes. But it also made traffic planning, expansion of roads and traffic rules necessary.

Nowhere in the early days of the automobile was the battle for space on the road fought as intensively as in Graubünden: After the Graubünden government banned the automobile from the roads around 1900, it took a whole 25 years and 9 votes before the ban was lifted. Since then, the discussions about automobility have not lost any of their explosiveness, and the fascination with the car remains unbroken.

The exhibition "Attention car! A Century on the Roads of Graubünden" explores where the desire for cars and car frustration are particularly high, which topics and questions arise again and again and which aspects cause particularly strong emotions. Visitors are invited to deal with the many aspects of automobility in Graubünden then and now.
