Hydrologische Extremszenarien für die Schweiz: heute und in Zukunft

Description
Hydrological extreme events such as floods and droughts can cause major damage in various sectors from agriculture to infrastructure - and the trend is rising with climate change. In order to be prepared for such extreme events today and in the future, we need to know how often they occur, how big they are and how they will change in the future. To answer these questions, extreme value statistics and various modelling approaches are used, linking climatic and hydrological models. In this talk, I would like to show how we can use these tools to develop hydrological extreme scenarios for Switzerland. Specifically, I use large hydrological ensembles to demonstrate how floods and droughts will change in the future. For the most extreme events, the simulations show a clear picture: both extreme floods and water scarcity situations will increase in both strength and frequency in the future. In order to meet these expected changes, adjustments in water management and spatial planning are necessary.
