Lai da Tuma/Lake Toma: The 1,230-kilometre journey of the Rhine begins at the source of the Rhine. Much of what happens here has an influence on its course. That is why the inhabitants of the municipality of Tujetsch - on whose soil the source of the Rhine lies - take care of their natural wonder. The mighty Vorderrhein glacier covered the entire Surselva during the last ice age. The mountain landscape of the Oberalp Pass, formed by Gletschen, is the source area of the Vorderrhein. The ice stream has long since melted, leaving behind is a firn hollow in which the Lai da Tuma, at the foot of the Piz Badus, is embedded. A jewel among the Swiss mountain lakes at 2,345 m above sea level.M. - unique in its beauty, magic and significance.

From Trun: From Trun, walk on the left side of the Rhine to Tavanasa. Here you cross the Vorderrhein over the old Rhine bridge. From Tavanasa you walk on the Polenweg, which was built between 1940 and 1945 by interned Polish soldiers. Commemorative plaques and a shrine at the western end of the Plaun Grond recall the history of the fascinating river landscape.

From Ilanz: From Ilanz it goes along the Vorderrhein through a floodplain of national importance into the heart of the gorge to Versam Station. The Rhine Gorge is characterized by the sandstone walls up to 300 meters high. The "Swiss Grand Canyon" offers an unforgettable fauna and flora. Since there is still no continuous hiking trail between Versam Station and Trin Station, this section must be covered by the Rhaetian Railway. From Trin station, continue on foot again. Along the riverbank, the path leads to Reichenau, where the Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein merge.
